I read your commentary on Christianity on domainbaron.com and it was
fairly well written. You are close on your explanations of what we believe
(I am a believer) and your sarcastic style is very effective in portraying the
Bible as a farce.
I think it is very important to think through what a person believes
and people who challenge what we believe are essential in making sure that what
we believe is true, not just a whim that we have decided to follow.
The only real disappointment that I read was your statement that we
should stop giving money to religious organizations. I agree that some are
corruptible and some money is used inappropriately. However, I'm know that
"believers" contribute more to helping the poor, both here in North America and
oversees. I have seen polls that show that believers give more than non
believers (averages of 1.9%-5% for believers compared to 0%-2% for non
believers), and not only to churches (which run soup kitchens, etc.) but also
directly to those organizations that help the poor.
Maybe our beliefs are laughable to you but I would appreciate some
acknowledgment that what we do does benefit society as a whole.
Your retort maybe that we do a lot of damage to society through
intolerance than what society benefits. Currently, I see more tolerance
than ever before except in tolerance for Christians. We are becoming the
estranged ones now.
Also, I know there are many hypocrites in our churches and we are
being judged by people for the acts of a few, not the acts of the many. I
think that no matter what organization you look in, you will find hypocrites,
whether in politics, or anti-religious organizations. I do my best not to
paint a group of people with one brush when it comes to races or other religions
and I would appreciate the same consideration when it comes to my beliefs.
Thank you for letting me respond.
