Hey Darwin,
I must say you certainly don't take
prisoners! As one who was indoctrinated into the Catholic dogma, and who
after seriously trying (as a child) to really, really, really believe, I quit
believing or at least seriouly doubting it all around the same time my
elder brother informed me that Santa Claus was just Gino Mandolli dressed up to
look like the jolly elf (around age 11 or 12, I think -- we had more sheltered
childhoods in the 1950's). In any event, I finally came to the conclusion
that religion is irrelevant and purely mythical, due in no small measure to the
evolution of the internet. After initially checking out the "skeptic ring"
sites starting a few years ago and continuing to present I have at last come the
point of "outing" myself as an atheist. It is hugely satisfying and I have
nearly convinced my brother, who is a recovering Catholic (and is progressing
well with his deprogramming) that this is the only rational way to come to terms
with life's great philosophical questions.
Actually, I think we waste too much of our life's
time and energy debating this stuff. If others wish to believe in God, or
Santa Claus, or the Tooth Fairy, or the Big Giant Head, that is their
business. My objections to organized religions in general and Christianity
in particular is the arrogance of their postulations. With regard to your
site offending them, it is a very simple matter to exit the site and keep their
theological "bubble zones" totally in tact. I sincerely hope that your
"shake 'em by the lapels" attitude gets at least a few thinking. I notice
that a lot of your respondents on the pro religion side of the fence hold
the view that atheism is a "belief" not disimilar to a religious belief
system. I don't know how much clearer it can be stated that atheism
means without theism -- theism of course meaning a belief in the the
metaphysical, i.e "God," while atheism is exactly the opposite --- a NON
belief. Wish they would get it straight!
I'll leave you with a quote from a copy of
Skeptical Inquirer, which has become my personal creed:
"Why
live, if not to learn? Why learn if not to understand? How are
we
to understand, if we do not reason?" --
Ralph Estling
